A few months ago I was walking through Pines Beach and Kairaki near where I live and noticed how many empty spaces there were where homes used to be. I have often thought about taking images of the aftermath of our earthquakes but I have struggled to work out what I wanted to say – and probably I didn’t want to think about the earthquakes anyway. I finally pulled out my camera and started to take some images of the vacant lots where people used to live. I thought about going dark and dingy, or monochrome (which I like anyway) but decided in the end I preferred to show more what I actually saw; which was the earth and lots of greenery all about. I guess what I want to say is that while it is sad that the homes are gone there is still hope and beauty left behind. These are a few of my images with my first attempts at processing them, no doubt they will change more over time.
